This weekend was Chaos in Tejas here in Austin, punk bands from all over the world and crust punks from all over come to town for the weekend. I teamed up with The Austinist and shot a couple of shows for them, which I must thank for having me. I really dont have much else to say, so here are the pictures.
Thursday, I got off work late and caught a few of my favorite bands: Trash Talk, Annihilation Time, and Cro-Mags. I also remembered how much I dislike the outside stage of emos, terrible lighting.
Friday/Saturday (in the morning) I stayed up until 3AM and took off down to the Lamar pedestrian bridge for a after party show of Career Suicide, and SKITKIDS, the bridge shook as usual and kids got rowdy.
Saturday I slept most of the day after getting home about 5 that morning, then proceeded to be lazy on the couch until about midnight. I went down to Red7 to catch The Business.
As usual, these are all available for prints right here

BMX
I got back on my bike after quite a few years of it just sitting on my porch doing nothing. Didn't do much riding but shot a couple good photos of some old friends, Ryan Smith, and Nate Hoss. This was my first time shooting BMX and I think it came out halfway decent, I hopefully plan to keep it up and shoot more of this stuff, any tips are welcomed as well.

Iron Age Record Release
I pushed my new camera to the limit last night with its low light performance and I must say, I was amazed. A year ago there is no way I would even think of doing this with my old D2x, and even with my D90 I wouldn't think about it. But with the amazing sensor that the D700 has it made this possible.. The Broken Neck, one of the most dark, smelly, DIY, awesome venue here in Austin, TX is where it was, lit by only 4 (low wattage) lights from about 10ft above the stage. I went out with only one lens and no flash, and came home happy, not something I plan to do regularly but it's nice to know this body can handle it. All of these were shot at ISO 6400, which to me seem like the quality of about ISO 1600ish on the Nikon D90... Nikon D700 FTW!
Iron Age released a record, Mammoth Grinder, and Power Trip also payed, there was another band who opened but I missed them and don't recall there name.
Anyway, here are the pictures from each set:
Power Trip:

Lie and Wait calls it quits RIP
Formerly known as Look Out, San Antonio hardcore band Lie and Wait played there last show this past friday. I have been photographing this band for years now, became great friends with the guys in the band, and now doing the same with there new projects they have going (FEED and Altus). They have toured the US because of this band, released quite a few records, played some fests, and met a ton of people. I'm definitely bummed to see them go, but there is a time for everything to end I suppose.
I made the trip down to San Antonio to document this time, rode along with Mammoth Grinder, or should I say, slept. I was super tired from working all day before the show, and I thank them for giving me a ride. We showed up a bit late and missed half of the first bands set, so I didn't get to much of Power Trip.

After there set I was able to set some lights up like I had planned. This technique doesn't work in all venues as well as this place, bigger venues with dark ceilings work decent but not the way this place handles the light. The Ten Eleven (formerly The Warhol) is tiny, and has low a low white ceiling, with this I was able to put 2 strobes at the back corners of the stage away safe from any danger of being smashed. With these 2 lights I was able to light up a huge portion of the ceiling and effectively turn it into a huge light source, as I mentioned before this technique doesn't work as well in bigger venues with high and/or dark ceilings; with those you pretty much have to point the light right at the backs of the band and you get a completely different result. The strobes were a couple of Nikon sb600 with a little mod I did to them so they would allow a mini jack for syncing, plugged into those were some Alien Bees Cybersyncs.
Now on to the show...

I chose to take some video of the last 5 minutes of Lie and Wait ever, finally putting the D90 to use.

a few from SXSW
As some of you might know I shot for SXSW music festival this year, it got me access to all the fun stuff. But I didn't plan things out right to partake it to many of them. However, I did see DEVO, and Metallica, both were something pretty cool to be there for and take photos of.
Metallica was suppose to be a secret show, but just like everything else these days the secret leaked and the place was packed. So many people there I couldn't get a decent spot to take pictures of them, oh well, I made due with what I could get.

I ended up leaving a bit early and headed to the other side of town and got to the music hall just in time for DEVO. I have never seen so many immature old photographers before, dudes pissed me off. To start off, there was so many photographers the PR lady ok'd 2 groups of photographers inside the press pit throughout 6 songs. Still, they all pushed and shoved and tried to get up to the front, then when asked to stand behind a door that was constantly being opened no one listened. Me and another guy (that I believe his badge said Chronicle on it) were the first ones they asked to stand back there to wait for the next group, but not even half of them listened and chilled out/waited there turn. By the time they let us in, there was plenty of space in the pit for all the assholes. I even saw some girl that snuck back up there after leaving the first group, grow up people and act like the professionals your suppose to be. sorry for the rant.
DEVO did there stuff, I got some nice shots, then left and went home for the night right after everyone abandoned the building when they finished playing whip it.

Bright White in the green room
Bright White.
I shot them a day or two after getting back in town at the Mohawk here in Austin, TX. I was super stoked on what images I managed to produce for these guys, all from a small green room on top of the downtown club. We started off with this couch up against the wall, right under a big Mohawk logo on the wall that also doubled as the longest wall in the room. That had to go, I managed to get a few shots that barely included it and got rid of it in aperture. The lighting setup for this was simple, a shoot through umbrella with a sb600 shooting through it on both sides up as high as I could get them.

We then pulled the couch out into the middle of the room and managed to turn the entire room black! By this time the sun had gone down a bit so the ambient light was real low, it would have been easier with huge powerful mono lights, but I made due with my small super portable strobes, thanks to what I have learned lurking around Strobist. Three light setup, all sb600's: 1 with a DIY'ish grid at full power and zoomed in all the way at camera right and up high, camera left, just a few feet from the subject was a shoot through umbrella down low for some fill, and then behind zoomed in all the way to add some separation between the black hair and the (now) black room.

I'm still stoked on how these came out.
